VISUAL ARTS CURRICULUM

The Visual Arts program encourages innovation while stressing strong technical and presentation skills. The program also promotes an awareness of current issues and ideas in the visual arts as they relate to contemporary society. The comprehensive curriculum allows students to build upon a foundation of Design Concepts and Drawing I in their freshman year and continues with studio, art history, and portfolio development classes with their experience culminating with an intensive Senior Project.

Drawing and Painting classes present formal and disciplined approaches to methods and techniques, and also encourage critical thinking and problem solving. Sculpture studios address small and large-scale projects, site-specific, group, and installation work in contemporary, figurative, and abstract themes. In Digital and Traditional “wet” Photography, students not only become proficient with their tools but also learn the active process of looking. Students will begin to develop a visual literacy with the ability to engage in formal criticism. Graphic Design courses emphasize an intellectual understanding toward visual communication while establishing skills in graphics, typography, and layout. Coursework is augmented with field trips to galleries, museums, and workshops with visiting artists. Students are also encouraged to participate in numerous local, regional and national competitions and exhibitions. The Visual Arts Program prepares the student for advanced college, university, apprenticeship study and entry into arts related professional fields.
